AEP retirees eligible for disaster relief aid

Since 2005, three AEP retirees have received financial assistance totaling $7,750 through the AEP Emergency Disaster Relief Fund. Two of the retired employees experienced fires in their homes, while the third fell victim to flooding from Hurricane Gustav, according to The Salvation Army which administers the relief fund for AEP.

During the same period, 219 active employees received aid from the fund which provides up to $3,000 per eligible emergency incident.

Launched in 2002 with a contribution from the company, the fund provides money for expenses such as food and necessary household expense, emergency housing, home repairs, replacement of furniture, appliances or clothing, and emergency interim day-care services.

The fund provides assistance to employees and retirees who are victims of natural disasters and other types of catastrophic events, which may include personal tragedies, domestic violence or criminal activity. Applications are reviewed on the basis of need, not on the basis of income. Having the Salvation Army handle requests for assistance ensures that all applications are reviewed promptly, professionally and impartially — normally within two days of receipt — and in full confidentiality. The Salvation Army may also provide other resources or referrals to those in need.

While in many cases the grants cover only a small portion of the recipients’ needs, most express gratitude for the assistance that was provided. Here are responses from two recipients:

  • “I think it is wonderful that this money was available to our family at such a devastating time, and we are most thankful to the Salvation Army and AEP for providing it.”
  • “It is good to know that there are good people out there during these hard times. Words cannot express our gratitude.”

Donations to the fund can be made by check or credit car, or via payroll deduction by active employees.  Contributions to the fund are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.  To donate, print and mail a deduction contribution form.
